Starting sometime around the middle of July, Akira became obsessed with the idea of going to the beach.

Barring one or two days a month when something at the office made an eight-o’clock start unavoidable, I was not an early riser. As a general rule I didn’t get up until after ten, and I would then spend a leisurely morning having breakfast, shaving, and all the rest of it before setting out for work about an hour later. The three other members of the menage were all up hours before me. Shimada left the house at eight every morning, and Yoko generally went out on the first of her feed-the-cats missions around the same time. Akira sometimes went with her, and sometimes not—but whether he went with her or stayed at home, he was still out of bed and on his feet at roughly the same time. I had grown used to enjoying the first hour or so of every day on my own. Akira’s beach obsession marked the end of my morning solitude.

The first thing I did every morning was go to the bathroom. By the time I emerged less than a minute later, the curtains to my room were drawn and Akira would be standing by the window with a look on his face that made it clear he had something to say that just couldn’t wait. He’d give me a goofy grin and start singing at the top of his voice, his body gyrating in time to the “music.”
